I Need Thee Every Hour 1

So often in my prayers, I find myself drawn to the words to the beloved hymn, “I Need Thee Every Hour”. I am frequently overwhelmed as I try to discipline, nurture, home-school, feed, and all the other tasks that are required in a day of caring for 4 young children. I am daily in need of wisdom, strength, consistency, and patience, and I cannot do all that is required of me with out my precious Father’s help.

I decided tonight to look up the origin of the song, and was interested to find this quote by the author, Annie Hawks, “One day as a young wife and mother of 37 years of age, I was busy with my regular household tasks. Suddenly, I became so filled with the sense of nearness to the Master that, wondering how one could live without Him, either in joy or pain, these words, “I Need Thee Every Hour,” were ushered into my mind, the thought at once taking full possession of me.”

I need thee every hour,
most gracious Lord;
no tender voice like thine
can peace afford.

I need thee, O I need thee;
every hour I need thee;
O bless me now, my Savior,
I come to thee.

I need thee every hour,
stay thou nearby;
temptations lose their power
when thou art nigh.

I need thee every hour,
in joy or pain;
come quickly and abide,
or life is in vain.

I need thee every hour;
teach me thy will;
and thy rich promises
in me fulfill.

I need thee every hour,
most Holy One;
O make me thine indeed,
thou blessèd Son.
